Andy King

Conductor (Training Choir)

Andy grew up in Huddersfield, moving to the North East in 1997 to complete a Music Degree at Newcastle University, and completing his PGCE at Durham University.

From 2002 to 2013 Andy worked as Music Teacher, and eventually became Head of Performing Arts at The Academy at Shotton Hall in Durham and then spent two years as Head of Music at Richmond School in North Yorkshire. In September 2015 he moved to London to take up a position as Director of Music and Drama at Haberdasher’s Askes Hatcham College in Lewisham.

In addition to his teaching in the North East, Andy conducted the Tees Valley Youth Choir, who featured in the BBC music “God Only Knows” track, and won a number of awards at the National Festival of Music for Youth, appearing at the School’s Prom at the Royal Albert Hall in 2011. In 2000 he founded Northern Spirit Singers, and conducted them for 15 years, winning the Adult Category in the National Choir of the Year competition in 2014.

Andy has had a long association with the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain, joining as a tenor in the Training Choir in 1996, taking part in BBC Proms and a World Tour with the Main Choir, and since 2003 he has taken a number of staffing roles including Course Manager, Section Leader and Head of Pastoral Care.
