25th March 2018
St John’s Smith Square
Holst: The Planets
6.30pm

Stoneleigh Youth Orchestra
London Youth Choir
Ben Goldscheider (Horn)
Robert Hodge (Conductor)

With over 150 members across two orchestras, Stoneleigh Youth Orchestra (SYO) has been providing outstanding opportunities for young musicians in London since 1944. In this dazzling concert, the orchestra is joined by Ben Goldscheider, winner of the Brass Category Final in the 2016 BBC Young Musician Competition, to perform Penderecki’s virtuosic Horn Concerto.

Arnold’s Peterloo Overture is an extraordinarily vivid work that was written to commemorate the massacre of pretesting workers in Manchester in 1819.

Inspired by astrology and the ‘character‘ of the planets in our solar system, Holst’s seven-movement orchestral suite has been a firm favourite since its first performance in 1920. It is scored for extremely large forces, including orchestral rarities such as bass oboe and alto flute. SYO is delighted to welcome London Youth Choir who will join them to complete the line-up for this epic showpiece.
