Artistic Director & Co-Founder
Conductor, Girls’ Choir & Chamber Choir
From an early age Rachel Staunton had a passion for all things choral. She began singing with the award-winning Berkshire Youth Choir as a teenager and then with the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain. She gained a choral scholarship to read music at Royal Holloway, University of London, where she graduated with a first class honours degree. With a keen desire to become a choral conductor, she then studied at the Royal Academy of Music, graduating with numerous awards and an LRAM postgraduate diploma in choral conducting teaching. Rachel is an enthusiastic music educator. She held the post of vocal director for In Harmony Opera North (Classic FM’s Music Education Project of the Year 2014) and spent several years establishing the Opera North Children’s Chorus.
Over the past decade Rachel has worked as assistant director of the Training and Main Choirs of the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain and has directed the Junior Girls’ Choir. Something of a choral entrepreneur, Rachel has founded many choirs in and around London, and particularly enjoys working with young people. In autumn 2012 Rachel founded the London Youth Choir with colleague Suzi Digby OBE. She works regularly with the choir and has a particular interest in developing its education outreach programme. In 2014 Rachel was made associate of the Royal Academy of Music, in recognition of her contribution to choral music and work with young people.
