The London Youth Chamber Choir forms the pinnacle of excellence of the five choirs, with members aged 16 – 22. This twenty-voice SATB choir is made up of 16 senior members and four Apprentice Scholars, conducted by Greg Beardsell. Its members are among the finest young singers in London and are capable of tackling challenging and varied repertoire, ranging from ancient music to new commissions. The choir is proud to be the choral development partners of leading professional ensemble, Tenebrae.
The chamber choir provides its members with the richest possible musical experience and aims to transform them into exceptional musicians, ready for the professional world, through regular rehearsals, individual vocal tuition, workshops and exceptional performance opportunities. The chamber choir is privileged to work with a series of distinguished visiting conductors including LYC’s Associate Conductor Eamonn Dougan, Ralph Allwood MBE, Nigel Short, Ken Burton, Simon Halsey and Gareth Malone, as well as Paul McCreesh through The Gabrieli Roar scheme. The Chamber Choir perform at a variety of prestigious venues, including the Royal Albert Hall, Guildhall London, Glastonbury, Barbican, St John’s Smith Square and Southwark Cathedral, as well as on national television.
Chamber Choir members rehearse on Monday evenings during term time from 6 – 7.15pm, and are also required to participate in all Senior Choir rehearsals (7.30 – 9pm) and events. Chamber Choir members are required to re-audition annually and membership of the Chamber Choir is free of charge.
There are sixteen Senior Member places available in the LYC Chamber Choir (four each of SATB). Senior members attend all Chamber Choir and Senior Choir events and senior membership attracts a small termly stipend, to be used towards travel and singing lesson expenses. Senior members are predominantly aged 18+ and have notable technical development and choral experience.
There are four Apprentice Scholar places available in the LYC Chamber Choir (SATB). Apprentice Scholars are usually aged between 16 – 18, and are selected for demonstrating exceptional musical promise and dedication to developing their technical and choral knowledge. Scholarships to the LYC Chamber Choir are designed to offer an additional opportunity to such candidates, with a view to supporting their musical development through intensive rehearsals and peer support from Senior Members.
